After reading my introduction to playing daily fantasy baseball, I’d
like to discuss some tips and strategies to push the odds in your favor.
What to look for:
Bad starters –
Obviously a hitter going against a bad starter, is a better start than
when he’s going against Kershaw. Look for good hitters facing bad
pitchers.
Lefty/Righty Splits – Looks for hitters
who hit left handers or right handers particularly well. For example,
Troy Tulowitzki tends to crush lefties. He’s a good start against a left
hander, even better against a bad left hander. Look for teams who
typically have platoons or lefty and righty specialist. There are a lot
of these guys out there, who if played in the right situation, can
increase your odds.
Play the Ballpark – It goes
without saying that ballparks like Coors and the Ballpark at Arlington
are much better hitting environments. See who is playing in those
ballparks every night. Look beyond the home team. Visitors to good
ballparks often have well price players. Marlins hitters going from
their stadium to Coors is a huge boost in park factor.
Play Hot Streaks
– A player hitting well is a player hitting well. You only have to own
him for a day, not a year. Even if you think he’s playing way over his
head, ride the streak. This is one of the benefits I like best about
daily baseball. You can ride a guy like JD Martinez when he’s hot and
not have to worry about owning him when he’s hitting .200.
Don’t play batter vs pitcher
– This is going to be controversial advice. A lot of sites will point
to batter vs pitcher results as the number one place to start. I will
tell you that batter vs pitcher stats are far too small of sample sizes
to have any correlation to true results. Anything can happen in 20-30 at
bats. Past performance in these small sample sizes has no statistical
correlation to future success. Let your competition play batter vs
pitcher stats and push your odds up even greater.
Follow on Twitter – I have a post every day on a handful of cheaper starts for that day’s game.
Play a lot - The
best way to make the odds work in your favor is to play a lot. Play a
few games every night to lessen the risk of a bad night. The more you
play, the more your true talent will come through.
